Let me start off by stating I'm not trying to deal any low blows.

Has anyone else noticed how poorly these .Net group websites are developed/designed? (Especially this one).

Is there anyone that can attest to the "group" actually being something a bit more worthwhile than the website portrays?

I'd love to hear any feedback.

Thanks for the comments Reagan.

Yes, we are aware that the website needs work. Currently, only the basics are available on the site (upcoming meeting, location, & some basic info).

We do have beginnings of designs for a new multi-user group site that will improve usability significantly and that will help with group operations as well. While in the design mode it would be great to have feedback from site users in terms of what specific features they are looking for out of the site. Care to toss some ideas back to me?

Thanks,

Hey Art,

Thanks for the quick response!

I'd say my main complaint is when I try to RSVP to an event, it takes me to the login page - even if I'm logged in already!

From there, if I log in again, it takes me directly back to the event page with no confirmation that I've RSVP'd or not.

I think I see where an immediate improvement can be made...

Currently, when NOT logged in the site tells you to “Please Register and Log in (Top Right) to RSVP for this meeting” which could lead folks to believe that registering and logging in are all that are required to register. I have asked the webmaster to change the wording to “Please Log (Top Right) prior to RSVP’ing to the current meeting.“

The important point is that you must be logged in prior to using the RSVP button (top left). Also, confirmation is visual on the site (i.e. RSVP button changes) - there is no e-mail confirmation as of yet.

Thanks,

Art

Hey Art,

I see what you're saying, but I'm dealing with something a little different here:

I just loaded up socaldotnet.org and I was NOT logged in.

I clicked on the Login link in the top right corner, got logged in and now I have the options to either "Logout" or click on my name and change my profile.

The browser directed me back to the homepage where it shows an upcoming meeting for Mark Miller. I'm clicking the "RSVP HERE" link to the right of his name and it brings me right back to the login screen. After entering my username/password again, it brings me right back to the home page.

Hope that makes sense,

Okay. I think I understand now & I see where this can be confusing...

One of the things that we were trying to attempt to do with this implementation of the site was to allow entry of events in one place & have the events propagate out to many sites (www.lacsharp.org, www.ocvbug.org, www.mcsdstudy.org, & others) via RSS feeds. In fact, we enter all of the events over on the www.socalnetevents.org site. What you see on www.socaldotnet.org is an RSS feed of the event from www.socalnetevents.org. The RSVP HERE is intended to get you over to www.socaldotnet.org. The actual RSVP for the meeting itself is over on the left margin of www.socaldotnet.org just beneath the logo graphic.

I suppose we could remove the RSVP HERE link from the posting but then I would be concerned that folks going to www.socalnetevents.org (or other sites that consume the RSS feeds) might not get to the correct site to RSVP... The logo links on the RSS feeds do take folks to the login page though.

If you have ideas on how this could be improved for the current implementation of the sites, please feel free to share them. We will be addressing this in the new site as well...

Thanks,

Art

Yep. There was a mistake... It has been remedied though.

Thanks,
