This thread is to organize the Team System Study Group. Background is follows in this initial thread: ------------- We would like to get a Team System Study Group (TSSG) started – after Code Camp. I think it will be either a Special Interest Group (SIG) of SoCalDotNet or it can be a SIG of mcsdstudy.org (which could be considered a SIG itself…). We would like the TSSG to meet in Cypress (Knott Avenue exit off of the 91 Fwy. – which is a new meeting location that we are considering for SoCalDotNet). This facility has a great computer training room with 18 workstations (in addition to a larger room for a general meeting). John Miller – any interest in helping head this up since you are fully engaged with TS currently? If anyone would like to jot ideas down in terms of how to go forward (perhaps a twice-monthly meeting for 3 or 4 months to go through setup and implementation as well as ongoing operations – labs, etc.)… I will go ahead and set up a forum on www.socaldotnet.org to bounce a few ideas around. ----------- It turns out that Cypress may be a little far for John Miller but Cypress is fairly central so we will need some options (Saturday meetings or less frequent meetings which "might" be less less burdensome for John Miller or having someone else volunteer to take lead... Thoughts?

I think the Team System Study Group is a great idea. I am implementing Team System at a clients office right now so I would be happy to head up the group. Let me know who all is interested and in what capacity. Daniel

I'd prefer weekday meetings and I'm not opposed to meeting in Cypress but I we do I'd like some help just in case I can't make it, can't make it on time, etc. jMM Posted By Avilla on 1/6/2006 9:52:42 AM This thread is to organize the Team System Study Group. What is the mission of the SIG? Hands on experience? Featured speakers? Local speakers? Member networking? The hands on labs could be a challenge. Installing VSTS is reasonably straight forward but time consuming. But there is lots of material in the different available methods and work items. jMM

The mission needs to be arrived at. For me, it is hands on experience with local speakers... more of a study group feel rather than a traditional user group presentation. If we are intelligent about it, we may want to configure a server to help with development of User Group web portals and anything else that application of Team System might help User Groups with. Thoughts? Art

Here's my two cents... I like the idea of a study group with local speakers and lots of hands-on. Art's idea of setting up a TS server to support development for User Group related systems is a good one and it would be really nice if such a system could also be used for hands-on learning within the study group. That would be especially nice for those of us who don't otherwise have access to such resources. Installation and setup is of less interest to me than operations and use. My personal interest is primarily in setting up and managing projects within TS. Of course exposure to installation and setup still has value to me. The Cypress location with meetings once or twice a month would work well for me.

Hey all. It was great to see/meet many of you at Code Camp. Now that things are settling down a bit, let's consider the Team System Study Group again... I popped a survey up on this site. When you log in you should be able to see it. I would like to survey membership to measure interest. Can you guys take a look at the survey & let me know what you think? I chose Monday and Wednesday evenings as options to Saturday Mondays are wide open and since Wednesdays are generally open for me (other than the first Wednesday due to SoCalDotNet). Thanks, Art P.S. We can give more detail such as anticipated run length (perhaps 3 months?)... Thoughts?

I submitted my answer to the survey. I picked Monday, but Wednesday is also good to me. Regarding the contents, installation of Team System is nice to know, but I rather get more hands on experiences on how to use TS from the speakers. Woody (from MS) recommended using virtual lab. I think that's a great idea. Perhaps it is another option to consider? In addition, Team System is only a tool. It is to help the software development team during the software development life cycle. In order to fully understand and utilize this tool, should we also have topics on the concepts, like Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF), Software Factories, Domain Specific Languange (DSL), etc... Or should we focus on the tool only? Either way is fine to me. Just my two cents.

I participated the survey. I think travel from SGV to Cypress is still reasonable. James

Art, Here are some proposed enhancements to the VSTS Study Group survey that may be useful in moving the group forward. Day Preference: What day is your preference for study group meetings? Pick one: Saturday, Monday, Wednesday, Don't care Frequency: How often would you like he study group to meet? Pick one: Once a month, Twice a month, Don't care Location: Will the Cypress (Buena Park?) location work for you? Pick one: Yes, No Format: What format would you like to see the group use? Pick one: Study group, Presenters, Don't care Focus: What aspects of Visual Studio Team System would you like the study group to focus on? Pick many: - Broad survey of VSTS and Team Foundation Server - Build - Configuration and customization - Defect and change control - Domain Specific Language (DSL) - Installation - Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF) - Project management - Requirements management - Software development life cycle - Software Factories - Team communications - Testing and test management - Version control - Work item tracking - Other (please specify) I'd like to do what I can to help get this study group going. I don't have a lot of time to commit to it right now but I'll do what I can. - Bryan
